Still nothing unfortunately:
Here are the error messages from "net start npf" depending on the
registry value:
--
The system cannot find the file specified:
\systemroot\system32\drivers\npf.sys
system32\drivers\npf.sys
--
The system cannot find the path specified:
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\npf.sys
\windows\system32\drivers\npf.sys
\%systemroot%\system32\drivers\npf.sys
C\\\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\npf.sys
--
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\npf.sys
"\systemroot\system32\drivers\npf.sys"
"\%systemroot%\system32\drivers\npf.sys"
"C:\windows\system32\drivers\npf.sys"

Pretty weird.
Please try this: open the registry and modify the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NPF\ImagePath to
"\systemroot\system32\drivers\npf.sys"
Then try "net start npf" again.
Have a nice day

Ok.
Please check that the file "npf.sys" is available under
c:\windows\system32\drivers. If it's there, I need to know the date,
size and version.
Have a nice day

It is still not starting unfortunately:
C:\>net start npf
System error 2 has occurred.
The system cannot find the file specified.
--
I also notice a system event in the Windows Event
Viewer:
Source: Service Control Manager
EventID: 7000
Description: The NetGroup Packet Filter Driver service
failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
--
If I run "sc query npf", I get:
C:\>sc query npf
SERVICE_NAME: npf
TYPE : 1 KERNEL_DRIVER
STATE : 1 STOPPED
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 2 (0x2)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
please try this:
1. open the registry with regedit.exe
2. go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NPF\Enum.
3. Delete the key named "INITSTARTFAILED".
4. Reboot the machine
5. open a command line and execute "net start npf", and
tell me the result.
Have a nice day

Subject: [Winpcap-bugs] Adapter not showing up
I have installed WinPcap and rebooted
(downloaded and tried both versions on the winpcap.org page and the one
included with nmap - same results), but my ethernet adapter is not
listed:
C:\>windump -D
1.\Device\NPF_GenericDialupAdapter (Generic
dialup adapter)
There should be a Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet
adapter listed. I have also tried installing the latest version of the
Broadcom driver. Also, npf_mgm -r works, but npf_mgm -s gives an error:
Error starting service NPF:The system cannot find the file specified. I
am running this as a user in the administrators group.
WinPcap: v3.1 (also tried with nmap version and
the 4.0 alpha version)
OS: XP SP2 Professional
Network Adapters Installed on System: Broadcom
NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet (bcm57xx), VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter
for VMnet1 (virtual), VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8
(virtual)
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Chris
