[Windump] runing windump as a windows service

Hi Gianluca,

Yes I had read the article, that is where I had gotten the first idea.
Unluckily even with adding the registry entries it did not help. I
thought it could solve my problem of running windump in the background
so that if the system rebooted it would auto start. I have setup the
system to auto logon and run a script to do what I need for now until
something better comes along.

Thank you for your assistance,

Pasquale

Pasquale,

sorry for the late answer.

The documentation of instsrv seems to point out that instsrv is just
used to install services, not to run an application as a service, at
least from what i read here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137890

Have you tried following the guidelines there?

Have a nice day

GV

Hello Gianluca, thank you for the reply.

I get the same error see below.

	C:\>net start npf

The NetGroup Packet Filter Driver service was started
successfully.

	C:\>net start windump

The service is not responding to the control function.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2186.

The following is how I installed the service with instsrv:

	C:\usr\apps\tcpdump>instsrv windump c:\windump\windump.exe -i 2
-C 100 -W 2 -n -w c:\buffer\data -s 0 -F c:\windump\dump_filter

Is it possible that it is the command line additions, is there a
way to create a ini file or config file for windump?

	Thanks,

	Pasquale Riccio

	Can you please try this?

From the command line, first run "net start npf" and then "net
start windump" and let me know if it works.

	Have a nice day

I am trying to set up a system with windump, I am using
windows 2003 and would like to make sure that windump runs even though
someone is not logged on.

I am using instsrv.exe from the Windows server 2003
resource kit, windump installs as a service ok, but when I try to start
it I get the following message:

		C:\usr\apps\snort>net start windump

The service is not responding to the control function.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2186.

		Thank you for any help,

		Pasquale
